Snowpack Update - Jan 5, 2025 Norn’s Range, BC

Date: January 5th, 2025

Submission by: Julie Ann Chapman, CMBGA Level 3/CAA ops 2, Lead Guide at She Shreds Mountain Adventures

Location: Norn’s Range, BC

Aspect: South

Elevation: 2,240m

We tested the snowpack with column tests on a South aspect at 2240M. Total snowpack height was 155cm. The surface had about 10cm of fresh snow that was redistributed by recent winds. We got quantified resistant planar results on the Dec 26 crust which was down 29cm at this location. We got quantified hard sudden collapse results below the Dec 12 crust that is buried down 29cm at this location.

Strong easterly winds have stripped and scoured open features, forming dense, wind affected deposits of snow. In sheltered areas, 30 to 50 cm of settling snow exists. (Check out the Dec 31 2024 MIN report from Keith Robine in Kootenay Pass for more details)
