  • CAA Level 3 / Alpine Solutions, Lead Avalanche Technician

    Ben Jackman is a seasoned Avalanche Professional based in Fernie, BC, beginning his avalanche career in 2005. Over his career, Ben has developed a diverse background in avalanche risk management and planning spanning various sectors, including ski areas, transportation corridors, industrial construction and avalanche education for the Canadian Avalanche Association's industry training program.

    Steve Kuijt. Working for Island Lake Snowcat skiing since they started snowcat skiing there. Has also worked guiding Heli Skiing at Mike Wiegele’s, CMH Bugaboos and several backcountry ski touring lodges. Canadian Avalanche Association Professional Member, Association of Canadian Mountain Guides Ski Guide and Certified Avalanche Blaster with Worksafe BC.

    Tyler Carson started in the Avalanche Industry in 1998 as a contract instructor for the British Army Training Unit Suffield. Currently, He is a CAA Professional Member, having completed the CAA Industry Training Program Level 3, he is presently serving on the Canadian Avalanche Association Board Directors, and is working as a CAA ITP Instructor, and has 10 years of AST instructing experience. In his day job Tyler is the Forecasting Supervisor at Fernie Alpine Resort and a reluctant social media content creator.

SOTS EXPANDS FROM BC’S INTERIOR TO THE COASTAL MOUNTAINS: WELCOME WHISTLER! State of the Snowpack is growing! After building strong roots across BC’s interior, we’re excited to announce our expansion into the Coastal Mountains with a brand-new chapter in Whistler, BC for the 2025/26 season. Starting this December, the community will gather monthly at Evo Village Sports for live State of the Snowpack events. These evenings will feature presentations from Whistler Blackcomb’s forecast team, who will share their deep knowledge of local conditions and avalanche safety. Dates and times will be confirmed soon — check back for updates, and make sure to like, tag, and subscribe so you don’t miss a single announcement. Dear SOTS Family, Each of us loves the mountains. It’s why we at SOTS do what we do ~ because we care deeply about empowering all who wish to play in the snowy backcountry to be able to come home at the end of the day. But right now, we, the SOTS team and you, our SOTS community & family, are grieving profound loss. The recent avalanche incident at Stellar Heli Ski that claimed the lives of Jason Remple, Jeff Keenan and Alex Pashley has hit the entire backcountry community hard. Our hearts are with their families. Our hearts are also with Clay Mitchell, the lone survivor, whose road to recovery has only just begun. We honour them by acknowledging their loss, by coming together as a community to support one another, by sharing support and resources of support.
