Meet the Kimberley Team

  • CAA PRO / Avalanche Canada Forecaster

Simon Horton is Avalanche Canada’s research officer and senior forecaster. He holds a PhD in Avalanche Mechanics from the University of Calgary and leads international work in numerical avalanche forecasting. Based in Kimberley since 2019, he enjoys exploring the surrounding mountains.

  • CAA Pro + L3 / CSGA 3

Tyson Rettie is a ski guide, avalanche professional, and public forecaster with extensive experience working in complex winter mountain environments in Canada, Australia, and China. He is the founder and president of Braille Mountain Initiative, a registered charity dedicated to empowering blind and visually impaired people through backcountry skiing, hiking, and avalanche education. Tyson is involved in professional development, risk management, and education within the avalanche and guiding industries.

  • CAA PRO / ACMG Apprentice

Growing up in Australia, the winters were always too short for Leslie, so he followed it north and fell in love with the Rockies. After a decade on various ski patrols, he shifted into forecasting with Avalanche Canada. He loves skiing, snowmobiling, and never says no to a magic-carpet lap.

  • CAA 2 Practitioner / Kimberley SAR
