Location: Selkirk’s North of Kaslo, BC Aspect: all aspects Elevation: 1900m-2300m Terrain Traveled: We unloaded the sleds at snowline at 1300m and travelled for most of the day between 1900m and 2300m Snowpack Depths: Snowpack varies from 90cm- 100cm between 1900m & 2300m. Coverage is still marginal with open creeks, rocks and stumps hidden just below the snow. A-arm roulette at its finest. We did find a very supportive crust down 50cm on all aspects between 1900-2300m where our ski tips were not penetrating through, but our tracks were. Date: November 15, 2024 Submission by: Judson Wright, ACMG Guide, Lead Guide & Owner at Kootenay Backcountry Guides Location: the Nelson Range Aspect: South Elevation: 2050m Terrain Traveled: We travelled from 1600m to 2050 on a South aspect and we observed north aspects at ridgetop. Snowpack Depths: Snowpack varies from 60-80cm at 1600m to 140cm on a North aspect at 2050m. Coverage is still marginal in some areas with lower elevation creeks and forests having the worst. Treeline and above the coverage dramatically improves. Plenty of rocks, stumps and creeks are still present, but for November 15th the coverage is excellent. Even the alders are starting to lay down in some places. Avalanches: We did not observe any avalanches but our travel was fairly limited. Surface conditions: POWDER...We observed a fresh batch of surface hoar that was present from last night. As the next storm rolls in expect the new snow to bond poorly and create storm slabs. There was evidence of south winds creating some wind loading on North aspects. A friendly reminder that Whitewater is currently not operational and travel around the resort is not recommended.Crews are hard at work getting ready for the winter so be aware there is equipment travelling around the resort and in the base area. Please be respectful of staff, make sure to thank them for their hard work, and be a responsible dog owner to ensure a pet-friendly space.

Date: November 8, 2024 Submission by: Judson Wright, ACMG Guide, Lead Guide & Owner at Kootenay Backcountry Guides Location: Goat Range Aspect: North Elevation: 2300m Details: Too early on recording the content, and a little late on getting it out, but we are back in action with our first snowpack update from yours truely, ACMG Judson Wright. The Kootenay Region received its first big snowfall of the season this past week. Between Halloween and November 4th approximately 30-50cm fell! The snowpack starts at 1200m and grows with elevation to approximately 50cm at 2000m. Above that, 60-80 cm has accumulated. Remember that early-season hazards like rocks, stumps, creeks, and logs are present everywhere except on smooth high-elevation slopes. Getting to these areas likely involves traveling through less-than-ideal areas. Remember that slopes steep enough to slide present avalanche hazards where smooth ground cover exists.
