Public day | Wednesday, september 30th
We’re excited to be part of Public Day on September 30th, with a SOTS booth and Executive Director Morgan Dinsdale joining a panel discussion at 2 p.m. Public day is a snow and avalanche workshop in collaboration with Avalanche Canada, open to the public.
The goal of public day is to give an opportunity to the wider backcountry community to get involved in the ISSW, and learn more about avalanche safety and the practice of snow science. This gathering offers an excellent chance for the entire community to connect with avalanche professionals, participate in lively discussions, and attend informative presentations.

Poster presentations offer an opportunity to share knowledge, spark conversations, build connections, and bring together different perspectives from across the community.
The SOTS team will be presenting on October 1st, from 1:30 to 5:30PM on the feature stage. We’ll be presenting the SOTS framework: The State of the Snowpack: A Community-Based Approach for Transforming How Avalanche Forecasts Are Interpreted and Applied (Paper #72).

Workshop | saturday, october 3rd
We’ll wrap up ISSW on October 3rd with the Communication in Public Avalanche Forecasting Workshop. This workshop brings together practitioners as well as external communication and social science experts to explore how we can communicate hazard and risk more effectively. Through shared experiences and discussion, participants will examine message framing, emotional tone, and trust — and work toward a common understanding of effective avalanche risk communication. We will share some of the SOTS “secret sauce” for communicating avalanche risk effectively and efficiently at community events.
