CAA Recognizes SOTS Snowpack Presentations for CPD Points!

We’re excited to share that the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) has officially confirmed that State of the Snowpack (SOTS) snowpack presentations now qualify for Continued Professional Development (CPD) points.

This recognition is a major milestone for SOTS and a well-deserved acknowledgment of the professional effort and community impact of our presenters.

What This Means for Avalanche Professionals

Every winter, SOTS events are powered by avalanche professionals who volunteer their time and expertise to share local snowpack insights with their communities. From analyzing field data to preparing engaging presentations, these individuals play a crucial role in helping backcountry users make informed, safe decisions.

Now, the CAA has confirmed that this work also contributes toward members’ professional development. Snowpack presenters can earn one (1) CPD point per hour of preparation and delivery, up to a maximum of 20 points per year. Even better — this recognition applies retroactively to all SOTS presentations since 2019.

About the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA)

The CAA is the professional organization representing avalanche practitioners across Canada. Its members include guides, forecasters, researchers, educators, and technicians who are committed to advancing the science and safety of avalanche work.

Through the CPD framework, the CAA encourages its members to pursue ongoing learning and contribution to the profession. Recognizing SOTS presentations within this framework highlights the value of community engagement and the critical role professionals play in bridging industry knowledge to the public.

Professionalism Meets Public Safety

All SOTS snowpack presenters hold CAA Avalanche Operations Level 2 or higher, ensuring every presentation is grounded in professional-level training, technical accuracy, and a deep understanding of local conditions.

This new CPD recognition underscores the calibre of the SOTS network — a community of experts dedicated not only to their own professional growth but also to improving public safety through education and open dialogue.

We extend a sincere thank you to the Canadian Avalanche Association for recognizing the contributions of these professionals and the importance of community-based avalanche outreach.
