State of the Snowpack - Feb 9, 2024

Date: Feb 9 2024
Location: Kootenay Pass
Submission: Judson Wright, ACMG Guide, Kootenay Backcountry Guides, SOTS Co-Founder

Winter is back in Kootenays!
30-40cm of snow has fallen and covered up a widespread crust that is up to 15cm thick and supportive.
Under the crust the entire snowpack is moist to the ground in many places.
Over the next while the story will be how the snow bonds to the crust.
Look out for wind effect and wind loaded areas where a slab may be present.
The best riding is found above 1750m in lower angle terrain.
