State of the Snowpack - Jan 8, 2024

Date: Jan 8 2024

Submission: Judson Wright, ACMG Guide, Lead guide and owner at Kootenay Backcountry Guides

Location: 5 Mile Creek, WH20
Aspect: N
Elevation: 2100 m
Total snow pack: 165 cm

It’s getting deep out here with more on the way!

Key take aways:
1. This video was made before Tuesday January 9th snowfall. Expect the amount of snow shown in this video to increase.
2. Expect storm slabs to be likely to trigger up to size 2.5 Tues and into Wednesday.
3. For many people this is the first time we have dealt with Considerable hazard this season. Don’t get caught in the habits formed during the low hazard we had for the last couple of weeks.
4. There are a few layers in the Snowpack that have yet to have a large load on them. Leave a margin of error when thinking about dropping in.
5. There are still many hazards under the snow. Rocks, logs and creeks are still lurking, especially below 1800m and on all South aspects.

Have fun out there. We deserve it for our patience this year!
